October – What’s Happening in the Garden…

October in the Garden: Tomatoes and Planting for Fall

October has arrived, and with it comes a mix of vibrant life and quiet preparation. The garden is shifting once again—from the lushness of late summer to the steady rhythm of fall. While the temperatures are cooling and daylight is fading, there’s still so much happening both outside and in the greenhouse.

Greenhouse Growing: Fall Vegetables Starting

Our greenhouse is now full of promise! Over the past few weeks, we’ve planted arugulacollard greensmustard greens, and lettuce—all staples for the cooler months ahead. These leafy greens are thriving in the protected warmth of the greenhouse, and many of them have already started to take off beautifully.

By maintaining consistent watering and ventilation, we’re setting the stage for fresh, homegrown salads and sautés well into the winter. Staggered planting ensures we’ll have a continuous harvest, keeping the homestead productive even as frost approaches.

Why a Greenhouse Makes All the Difference

In our climate, a three-season greenhouse is invaluable. It allows us to extend the growing season well beyond what’s possible outdoors. While the frost may put an end to most garden plants, the greenhouse stays warm and productive, giving us fresh food long after the first hard freeze.

Tomatoes: Wrapping Up the Season

Meanwhile, our tomato plants are still holding on—just barely. As October progresses, we’ve started pruning back the vines, removing excess leaves and stems so the plants can focus their remaining energy on ripening the last fruit of the season.

This careful pruning helps the tomatoes mature faster and prevents the plant from wasting energy on new growth that won’t have time to produce before the frost. It’s a bittersweet moment, knowing that these will be some of the last fresh tomatoes we’ll pick until next summer.

Preparing for the Months Ahead

As the days get shorter, we’re keeping an eye on nighttime temperatures and making sure everything is ready for colder weather. The greenhouse is insulated, the garden beds are being cleared, and compost piles are growing steadily with the remnants of summer’s plants.

Final Thoughts

October in the garden is a season of balance—the last burst of color from summer and the first taste of the greens that will carry us through winter. The tomatoes and peppers are making their final stand, while inside the greenhouse, kale, arugula, and mustard greens are just getting started.

It’s a month of gratitude, growth, and planning—a perfect reminder that even as the seasons shift, the garden never truly sleeps.
