Keeping Up with the Never Ending Mess

If you’ve ever dreamed of living the “farm-to-table” life, let me tell you—there’s a whole lot that happens between those two points. Sure, there’s the joy of harvesting your own food, gathering fresh eggs, and cooking with ingredients straight from your backyard. But what you might not see in those picture-perfect Instagram photos is the never-ending mess and the laundry pile that comes with it all. Around here, it’s more like farm to table to laundry… and repeat. Seriously, it is impressive the amount of laundry that the two of us go through!

The Reality Behind the Homestead Aesthetic

There’s something so grounding about homesteading. You’re connected to the land, the animals, and the rhythm of the seasons. But that rhythm also includes a whole lot of dirt. Between muddy chicken runs, garden soil, and duck ponds, my clothes never stand a chance. It’s not unusual to go from collecting eggs to kneeling in the garden, then realizing you still have to head to town—covered in who-knows-what.

Homesteading is beautiful, but it’s not clean. It’s raw, real, and a bit messy—and that’s exactly what makes it wonderful.

A Day in the Life (and the Laundry Room)

Morning starts with feeding the chickens and ducks, which usually means a light dusting of feed powder and a splash of mud on my jeans. Then I check on the bees—careful not to get honey on my sleeves (again). By the time I’m done tending to the garden and harvesting veggies for dinner, I’ve collected more dirt than I brought out there.

And then it’s into the kitchen—farm to table. Fresh salad, eggs, maybe a batch of cookies if I’m feeling ambitious. The satisfaction is unmatched… until I glance over at the apron, kitchen towels, and jeans now destined for the laundry room.

Sustainable Laundry on the Homestead

Part of the homesteading mindset is sustainability. So even laundry gets the thoughtful touch. Here are a few things I’ve learned that help keep the laundry process a little greener—and my sanity intact:

  • Line Dry When Possible: There’s nothing like the smell of sun-dried clothes on a crisp day. Plus, it saves energy and adds that touch of old-fashioned charm to the homestead.
  • Use Natural Soaps: Whether you make your own or buy eco-friendly brands, avoiding harsh chemicals keeps your clothes (and the environment) healthier. I love experimenting with homemade laundry soap made from washing soda, borax, and grated natural bar soap.
(Check out this great guide from Mother Earth News for natural cleaning recipes.)
  • Pre-Soak the Hard Stuff: Garden jeans and chicken chores require their own “prep cycle.” A good soak in baking soda and warm water works wonders.
  • Celebrate the Imperfection: Not everything needs to be spotless. Sometimes, a stain just means you’ve been living fully.

Finding Balance (and Humor) in the Mess

Homesteading teaches you a lot about balance. Some days, the dishes pile up because the greenhouse needed attention. Other days, the laundry mountain wins because the chickens decided to have a mud party. The trick is to laugh about it. Life on the homestead isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection, creativity, and making the most of every moment (even the messy ones).

So next time you see a “farm-to-table” photo that looks like a magazine cover, remember: somewhere nearby, there’s a washer running full speed, a pair of boots drying by the door, and a very happy homesteader smiling through it all.
