You have three magic genie wishes, what are you asking for?

Every now and then, I like to let my imagination wander. Between feeding the chickens, checking the ducks’ water, and peeking into the hives to make sure everyone’s doing okay, I sometimes catch myself daydreaming. What if a magic genie appeared—not from a fancy lamp, but from an old Mason jar tucked on the pantry shelf? What would I wish for to make this homestead life just a little bit easier?

Wish #1: A Self-Weeding, Self-Watering Garden

If you’ve ever gardened, you know that weeds are like uninvited guests who never leave. They show up early, stay too long, and somehow thrive no matter what you do. My first wish would be for a garden that takes care of the basics on its own—watering itself just right, keeping the weeds under control—but still letting me get my hands dirty when I want to. Because honestly, that connection to the soil is part of what makes this life so grounding.

Wish #2: The Gift of Healing Hands

This one comes straight from the heart. Every homesteader knows the ache that comes when one of the animals isn’t well. Whether it’s a hen showing signs of illness, a duck with a limp, or a honeybee colony struggling through the season—those moments weigh heavy.
If I had a wish, I’d ask for the ability to heal them. To know exactly what’s wrong and how to make it right. To handle each ailment confidently, whether it’s treating a respiratory infection, mending a sprain, or recognizing a parasite before it spreads. I’d love to be able to ease their discomfort and keep every creature here thriving and happy.

Wish #3: A Small Business That Truly Flourishes

My final wish would be for our small business—J & J Homestead—to continue to grow and flourish. Not in the flashy, overnight-success kind of way, but in the steady, meaningful way that mirrors the rhythm of the homestead itself.
I’d wish for the business to support us and our community, to connect us with people who care about where their food comes from, and to inspire others to try their own version of this life. I want our eggs, honey, vegetables, and stories to make their way into homes where people value authenticity and heart.
If I could wish for anything, it would be for the work we do here to continue to blossom—sustainably, purposefully, and with joy.

At the end of the day, I know there are no genies hiding in jars or magical shortcuts to this life. But maybe the real magic is already here—in the first green sprouts pushing through the soil, in the sound of the rooster greeting the morning, in the hum of bees gathering nectar.

Those moments remind me that while wishes are fun to dream about, the life we’ve built here already feels a bit like a dream come true.

Your turn — if a genie offered you three wishes for your homestead, what would you ask for?
