For a long time, the farmstand at J & J Homestead lived mostly in our imagination. It was one of those ideas that felt so close you could almost touch it, but there were always a few more steps, a few more obstacles, and a few more plans to make before it could truly become reality.
Yesterday, everything changed.
The small building that will soon become our farmstand was finally delivered, and with it came the moment when a dream stopped being a plan and started becoming something real.

A Big Delivery and a Long Day of Work
Getting the farmstand building into place was no small task. My husband and the delivery crew spent hours carefully maneuvering the structure into its exact location on the homestead. What seems simple when you picture it in your head can become quite the engineering challenge once the building is actually on site.
The ground had to be just right. The placement had to be perfect. And once the building was positioned, the work of leveling it began.
There is something incredibly satisfying about watching a structure settle into its permanent home. Slowly but surely, the building was adjusted, leveled, and positioned exactly where it needed to be. Every inch mattered.
This little building will soon become the heart of something much bigger.
Coming Home to a Dream Realized
When I arrived home and saw the building sitting there on the property, it honestly stopped me in my tracks.
For months we’ve been planning, preparing, and working toward this moment. We’ve talked about the farmstand countless times. We’ve imagined what it would look like, what it would hold, and the role it would play in the future of J & J Homestead.
Seeing it sitting there in real life made my heart feel incredibly full.
It was one of those quiet moments where you realize that something you’ve been working toward is actually happening.
The farmstand is no longer just an idea. It is real.
Why the Farmstand Means So Much to Us
For many homesteaders, a farmstand is more than just a place to sell products. It represents connection with the community, the ability to share what you grow, and the opportunity to turn hard work into something that supports the homestead.
At J & J Homestead, this farmstand will eventually offer a variety of items produced right here on the property.
Fresh eggs from our chickens and ducks.
Seasonal vegetables grown in the garden and greenhouse.
Honey from our bees.
Seedlings for other gardeners starting their own growing season.
And eventually, homemade goods that reflect the heart of the homestead.
Every jar, every carton of eggs, and every plant will represent the daily work that goes into caring for the animals, tending the garden, and nurturing this little piece of land.
The Work Ahead: Turning a Building into a Farmstand
While the building is now in place, the work is far from finished.
In many ways, the real work is just beginning.
The interior still needs to be painted to brighten the space and create a welcoming environment for visitors. The floor needs to be properly sealed and protected so it can handle years of foot traffic, produce crates, and the everyday activity of a working farmstand.
Shelving will need to be built so that everything has a place. We want the space to feel organized, clean, and inviting for anyone who stops by.
Like many homestead projects, this one will come together step by step. Each small task moves the project forward.
Progress After a Challenging Winter
This moment feels even more meaningful because the path to get here has not been easy.
Winter weather here in Virginia slowed many of our plans. Snow, ice, and soggy ground delayed the delivery of the building and made preparing the farmstand area difficult. There were days when it felt like we were waiting endlessly for the right conditions to move forward.
But homesteading teaches patience.
Sometimes the land decides the timeline.
Now that the building is here, everything feels like it is moving again.
A Turning Point for J & J Homestead
Standing there and looking at the farmstand building, it felt like we had truly turned a corner.
The homestead continues to grow and evolve. The animals, the gardens, the greenhouse, the bees — all of it is part of the bigger picture we are building here.
The farmstand represents the next chapter.
It represents sharing this journey with our community and giving people a place to experience the fruits of the homestead.
There is still a lot of work ahead, but yesterday was a milestone that we will not soon forget.
Sometimes progress on a homestead happens quietly, one task at a time.
And sometimes a truck pulls up, a building is delivered, and suddenly a dream becomes something you can see with your own eyes.
The farmstand at J & J Homestead has officially begun.
