One of my proudest moments this year

There are moments on the homestead that stop you in your tracks — moments when you realize that all the hard work, learning curves, and early mornings have led to something truly special. This season, we hit one of those milestones: the chicks we hatched this spring have officially begun laying their own eggs!

The Joy of Closing the Loop

When we first gathered those fertile eggs from our flock in the spring, it was about more than curiosity — it was a step toward full sustainability. From incubating the eggs, monitoring their progress, and watching tiny beaks crack open their shells, to now collecting fresh eggs from those very same birds — it feels like the circle has come complete.

Every egg laid now tells a story of dedication, patience, and self-reliance. It’s an incredible feeling to know that our flock is not just producing food, but also creating the next generation of egg layers right here on our own land.

Why This Milestone Matters

Reaching this point represents so much more than a new batch of eggs. It’s proof that sustainable homesteading works — that when you care for your animals, provide the right environment, and let nature take its course, the rewards are abundant.

This cycle means:

Self-sufficiency: We’re no longer dependent on purchasing chicks each spring. Healthier flock: Our birds are acclimated to our land, feed, and routines. Stronger genetics: Each generation is well-suited to our environment and conditions. Sustainability achieved: The homestead is now producing its own layers, closing one of the biggest loops in small-scale farming.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

There were plenty of lessons throughout this journey — from maintaining the right humidity levels in the incubator, to keeping the young chicks warm and safe, to finally integrating them with the adult flock. Patience was key. Each step reminded us that nature operates on its own time, and that’s part of the beauty of homesteading.

If you’ve ever thought about hatching your own eggs, it’s a rewarding adventure that deepens your connection to your flock. Every time you collect an egg from one of your home-hatched hens, you’re reminded that sustainability isn’t a destination — it’s a way of life.

Looking Ahead

As we look toward the next season, we’re filled with pride — and gratitude. Our homestead continues to grow, not just in size, but in purpose. This milestone marks another step toward self-reliance and environmental stewardship, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come.
