Spring Has Arrived… and So Has the Busy Season
It’s hard to believe that it’s already April, but here we are—and the homestead is in full motion.
This time of year always feels like everything happens at once. The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up, and suddenly every corner of the homestead needs attention. From animals to gardens to our farmstand, there is no shortage of work—but honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Our Farmstand Is Officially Open
One of the biggest milestones this spring has been opening our farmstand—and we’re already heading into our third weekend!
Right now, we’re keeping things manageable by opening weekends only, which has been the perfect balance. Between full-time jobs, planting the garden, and caring for the animals, this schedule allows us to grow at a sustainable pace.
Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve learned a lot—especially about:
- Time management
- Pacing ourselves
- Prioritizing what truly needs to get done
Like most things in homesteading, there’s no perfect formula—you just learn as you go. And despite the long days, it has been such a rewarding experience seeing the community show up and support local.
Getting the Garden Planted (and Lessons Learned)
Last week, Jason worked hard to get the garden in—and that alone feels like a huge accomplishment.
This season didn’t go exactly as planned when it came to seed starting. We didn’t have the best success rate, which meant we needed to pivot and purchase some plants to fill in the gaps.
And honestly? That’s part of the journey.
Every year, every season, brings new lessons. This year’s biggest takeaway:
Start seeds earlier.
It’s a simple lesson, but one that makes all the difference—especially when you’re trying to balance everything else that comes with homestead life.
Chicken Coop Clean-Out and Turkey Run Expansion
Today is all about getting back to the basics—cleaning out the chicken coops and tackling a long-awaited project: building a larger run for the turkeys.
As our flock grows, so does the need for better space and functionality. Expanding the turkey run is one of those projects that will make daily chores easier and improve the overall health and happiness of the birds.
It’s not always glamorous work—but it’s the kind of work that keeps everything running smoothly.
Preparing for Cornish Cross Chick Arrival
The next big event on the homestead is right around the corner…
Our Cornish Cross chicks arrive the week of April 13th!
This means the upcoming week will be all about preparation. Before they arrive, we’re making sure everything is ready to go:
- Large brooder cleaned and set up
- Feeders and waterers sanitized and in place
- Heating plates tested and working properly
- Backup supplies ready, just in case
There’s something exciting (and a little nerve-wracking) about preparing for new chicks—but it’s one of the most rewarding parts of raising your own food.
And Then… Chick Incubation Begins
As if April wasn’t already full enough, the following week we’ll begin incubating chicks.
Spring truly is the season of new beginnings on the homestead. Between meat birds arriving and chicks being incubated, we’re stepping fully into one of the most productive—and exciting—times of the year.
Embracing the Fullness of the Season
April is busy. There’s no way around it.
But it’s also the beginning of everything we’ve been working toward—fresh food, new life, and a thriving homestead.
Yes, there are long days. Yes, there are lessons learned the hard way. But there is also something incredibly fulfilling about building this life step by step.
And as overwhelming as it can feel at times, it’s also a reminder:
👉 This is what we’ve been working for.
Final Thoughts from the Homestead
As we move further into spring, we’re focusing on:
- Staying organized
- Giving ourselves grace when things don’t go perfectly
- Enjoying the process, not just the results
Because at the end of the day, homesteading isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress, purpose, and building something meaningful.
