As the crisp November air settles in, our garden has officially entered its season of rest — or at least, that’s what it looks like at first glance. While most people picture bare soil and empty rows this time of year, there’s still plenty happening here at J & J Homestead. November is when we trade the rush of summer harvests for the quiet satisfaction of winter preparation and greenhouse growing.
Inside the Greenhouse: Greens Slowly Growing
The greenhouse is our happy place this month. It’s slowing filling with shades of green from arugula, mustard greens, collard greens, kale, and lettuce, all thriving in the cooler temperatures. We’ve also started new trays of seedlings to keep the harvest staggered — a little planning that ensures we’ll have fresh greens well into the winter.
There’s something incredibly rewarding about stepping into the warm greenhouse on a chilly morning and seeing life pushing forward, even as frost glitters outside. The humidity, the scent of damp soil, and the steady rhythm of growth are a gentle reminder that the homestead never truly stops — it just shifts gears.
Wrapping Up the Outdoor Beds
Outside, the tomato and pepper plants have finally been pulled, their remaining fruits harvested and preserved. We’ve started adding compost and mulch to the raised beds, giving the soil a well-deserved rest after a long season of productivity. Cover crops are taking root in some areas — rye and clover — to help prevent erosion and replenish nutrients for next year’s planting.
And while most of the garden looks quiet, the garlic has just gone in the ground. It’s one of our favorite November rituals — tucking cloves beneath the soil to rest and ready themselves for the spring burst.
🍂 Seasonal Chores and Soil Care
This is also the month for small but meaningful chores: cleaning up tools, organizing seed packets, and planning next year’s rotations. We spread fallen leaves across some of the empty beds — nature’s mulch — and keep an eye on moisture levels to protect the soil’s living community.
The compost pile is in full swing, layered with garden trimmings, leaves, and kitchen scraps. By turning it regularly, we’re making sure it stays active through the colder months, ready to fuel next season’s growth.

November may feel like the end of the gardening year, but here on the homestead, it’s more of a gentle pause — a time to reflect on what grew well, what we’ll plant differently next year, and how we can make the most of the space we have.
There’s a calm joy in tending the garden when the world seems to be winding down. The pace slows, the work shifts indoors, and yet, life keeps unfolding in the soil and under the glow of greenhouse lights.
