Every once in a while, someone will walk through our farmstand and quietly wonder why our prices are higher than what they can find at a grocery store.
It’s a fair question.
After all, when you’re standing in front of a basket of tomatoes, a dozen eggs, or a loaf of fresh bread, it can be easy to compare the price tag without seeing everything that came before it.
The truth is, when you shop at a homestead farmstand, you’re not simply buying a product. You’re buying hundreds of hours of work, years of learning, and a commitment to quality that simply can’t be mass-produced.
Our Day Starts Long Before the Farmstand Opens
Most people see our farmstand when it’s fully stocked and ready for the weekend.
What they don’t see is that our day often begins before 3:00 a.m.
While much of the neighborhood is still asleep, the ovens are already warming up. Cookie dough has been mixed, muffins are baking, and bread is rising. Every recipe has been made from scratch using ingredients that we’ve carefully selected because they’re the ones we’d serve to our own family.
There isn’t a commercial mixer making hundreds of cookies in minutes. There isn’t an assembly line.
It’s just us.
Every tray goes into the oven by hand. Every cookie is portioned individually. Every loaf is checked before it’s packaged. Every label is printed and applied one at a time.
That’s not the fastest way to bake. But it’s the way we believe homemade food should be made.

Fresh Produce Doesn’t Grow Overnight
When someone picks up a tomato from our farmstand, they’re holding months of work.
That tomato started as a tiny seed in our greenhouse.
It was watered every day, fertilized, transplanted into the garden, trellised, pruned, weeded, and monitored for pests and disease. During Virginia’s summer heat, we’re watering before work, checking plants after work, and often harvesting in the evening so everything stays as fresh as possible.
We don’t simply plant a garden and hope for the best.
We’re constantly watching the weather, protecting plants from storms, adjusting irrigation during heat waves, and picking produce at just the right stage for the best flavor.
When you take home one of our tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, or herbs, you’re taking home produce that has been cared for every single day.

Every Egg Represents Daily Care
People often compare farm-fresh eggs to grocery store eggs. But the difference starts long before the egg is laid. Our chickens don’t get weekends off. Neither do we.
Every day they need fresh feed, clean water, clean nesting boxes, secure coops, predator protection, health checks, and plenty of attention. When Virginia experiences triple-digit temperatures, we’re adding electrolytes, creating additional shade, running fans, freezing treats, and making sure every bird stays comfortable.
During winter storms, we’re outside clearing paths, carrying water, and making sure everyone stays warm and safe.
The eggs in our farmstand aren’t just eggs. They’re the result of healthy, well-cared-for hens that receive our attention every single day of the year.

You’re Supporting Small-Scale Agriculture
One of the greatest compliments we receive is when someone tells us they appreciate knowing exactly where their food comes from.
When you buy from a homestead, you know who planted the garden. You know who collected the eggs. You know who baked the cookies. You know where your money is going.
Instead of supporting a large corporation, you’re supporting a local family that’s investing right back into the homestead—improving chicken coops, expanding gardens, planting fruit trees, maintaining beehives, and creating new products for the community.
Every purchase helps us continue doing what we love.
Quality Over Quantity
Could we make things cheaper? Probably. We could use lower-quality ingredients. We could reduce portion sizes. We could harvest produce before it’s fully ready. We could cut corners. But that isn’t who we are. If we wouldn’t proudly serve something to our own family, it doesn’t belong in our farmstand. That philosophy guides every decision we make.
You’re Buying Experience, Too
One thing that often gets overlooked is that every product represents years of learning. We’ve spent countless hours improving recipes, learning how to grow better gardens, caring for chickens, managing honey bees, solving problems, and continually refining what we do.
Every season teaches us something new.
Every challenge makes us better.
When you purchase from a local homestead, you’re benefiting from all of those lessons and all of that experience.
We Appreciate Every Customer
We understand that our products won’t fit every budget, and that’s okay. Everyone has different priorities when shopping for food. But for those who choose to support local farms and homesteads, please know that your purchase means far more than the dollar amount.
You’re helping preserve small-scale agriculture. You’re encouraging local food production. You’re supporting a family that’s passionate about sharing fresh food with our community.
Most importantly, you’re making it possible for us to continue doing what we love.
The True Value of a Homestead Farmstand
When you look at the price tag on a basket of tomatoes, a dozen eggs, or a fresh loaf of bread, remember that you’re seeing only the final step of a very long journey.
Behind every product are early mornings, late evenings, rainy days, hot summer afternoons, countless chores, and an incredible amount of care.
At J & J Homestead, we don’t measure success by how many items we sell.
We measure it by the quality of the food we produce, the relationships we build with our customers, and the opportunity to share a little piece of our homestead with every family that visits our farmstand.
To everyone who chooses to shop local, support small farms, and appreciate handmade food—thank you.
You aren’t just buying a product.
You’re investing in a dream, a family, and a way of life that we’re proud to share with our community.
