When we first opened the farmstand at J & J Homestead a couple of months ago, we truly did not know what to expect. We hoped that our neighbors would stop by for fresh eggs, baked goods, honey, and vegetables. We hoped that people would enjoy the little pieces of our homestead that we worked so hard to create. Most of all, we hoped that it would become something meaningful for our family.
Now, just a few short months later, I can honestly say that opening our farmstand has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever had.
Building a Small Farmstand Dream
Running a homestead farmstand while balancing full-time jobs, livestock care, gardening, baking, and everyday life has definitely added another layer of responsibility to our days. There are early mornings, late nights, endless dishes, ingredient shopping trips, feeding schedules, garden watering, and constant preparation for weekends at the stand.
But surprisingly, we’ve learned that we are capable of far more than we realized.
Somewhere along the way, the additional workload stopped feeling overwhelming and started feeling purposeful. We found a rhythm together. The farmstand has become a family effort that reflects who we are and what we value: hard work, fresh food, hospitality, and community.
Every weekend that we open the stand feels like another small milestone for J & J Homestead.
Learning the Science of Baking
One of the biggest surprises through this entire journey has been how much I have fallen in love with baking.
When we first started offering baked goods at the farmstand, I knew the basics. But over the past couple of months, I have learned so much more than I ever expected about the science behind baking. I’ve learned how butter temperature changes texture, how different sugars impact moisture, why eggs create structure, and how small ingredient adjustments completely change the final product.
There is something incredibly satisfying about experimenting, learning, failing occasionally, and then finally pulling the perfect batch of cookies or muffins out of the oven.
Baking has become part creativity, part science experiment, and part therapy.
Sometimes I catch myself thinking about how proud my mom would be to see this journey unfold. So much of what I’ve learned about cooking, hospitality, and caring for others started in her kitchen. In many ways, every recipe and every batch of baked goods feels connected to those memories.
That realization has made this experience even more meaningful.
More Than a Farmstand
What I appreciate most about this entire experience is that the farmstand has connected us with our community in ways we never expected.
Before opening the stand, we waved to neighbors occasionally or passed people on the road. Now, we get to have conversations every weekend. We see familiar faces returning for eggs and baked goods. We get recommendations, gardening stories, chicken advice, and updates about local happenings.
Little by little, our farmstand has helped make our corner of the community feel smaller and more connected.
That has been the greatest reward of all.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, there is something incredibly special about slowing down long enough to chat with neighbors over fresh muffins, homemade cookies, or a dozen eggs.
