If you keep bees, there comes a point in late summer when you start looking at every blooming plant a little differently.

By August, many of the flowers that seemed to be everywhere earlier in the summer are beginning to fade. The garden is changing, the days are getting shorter, and our thoughts as beekeepers start turning toward fall and eventually winter.

And then goldenrod starts blooming. You might have seen it while out and about!

Those tall sprays of brilliant yellow flowers along roadsides, fence lines, pastures, fields, and woodland edges aren’t just a sign that fall is on its way. For honey bees, goldenrod can be an incredibly valuable late-season food source.

For beekeepers, that makes it a plant worth knowing—and protecting.

What Is Goldenrod?

Goldenrod is the common name for a large group of flowering plants in the Solidago genus. There are many species native to North America, and different varieties can be found growing naturally in fields, meadows, roadsides, pastures, woodland edges, and other sunny areas.

Goldenrod is a perennial, meaning established plants return year after year.

Depending on the species and location, goldenrod generally begins flowering in late summer and continues into fall.

Here in Virginia, those bright yellow flowers often become increasingly noticeable during August and September. And their timing is exactly what makes them so important.

Why Goldenrod Is Important to Honey Bees

Spring and early summer can feel like a buffet for honey bees.

Fruit trees bloom. Clover appears. Gardens explode with flowers. Trees and wild plants provide pollen and nectar. But that abundance doesn’t necessarily continue through the entire season.

By late summer, colonies are still active and still need substantial resources, but some of their earlier nectar and pollen sources have disappeared.

Goldenrod can help fill that gap.

Its flowers can provide bees with both:

  • Nectar for carbohydrates and honey production
  • Pollen for protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients

That combination makes goldenrod particularly useful as colonies transition toward fall.

Goldenrod Can Be Part of the Fall Nectar Flow

Beekeepers frequently talk about the spring nectar flow, but depending on where you live and what plants are available, there can also be an important late-summer or fall nectar flow.

Goldenrod is often one of the plants contributing to it.

When conditions are favorable, honey bees may work goldenrod heavily.

Walk near blooming goldenrod on a warm, sunny day and you may see the flowers absolutely covered with activity—not only honey bees, but native bees, butterflies, wasps, beetles, and other pollinators.

For honey bee colonies, this late-season nectar can contribute to food stores that will become increasingly important as winter approaches.

But Goldenrod Isn’t a Guaranteed Nectar Flow

One important lesson in beekeeping is that flowers don’t automatically equal nectar.

Goldenrod nectar production can vary depending on:

  • Goldenrod species
  • Temperature
  • Rainfall
  • Soil moisture
  • Drought conditions
  • Location
  • Overall weather patterns

One year the bees may work goldenrod incredibly hard. Another year the same area may produce considerably less.

That’s one reason we shouldn’t assume that blooming goldenrod means our colonies automatically have enough winter stores.

Hive inspections and monitoring colony weight are still important.

Goldenrod Pollen Helps Colonies Prepare for Fall

Nectar gets a lot of attention because it eventually becomes honey, but pollen is equally important to a healthy colony. Pollen provides much of the protein bees need.

During late summer and early fall, colonies are undergoing an important seasonal transition. The colony will eventually reduce brood production as winter approaches, and healthy nutrition during this period helps support the bees being raised for the colder months.

Goldenrod can contribute valuable pollen during a time when fewer plants may be blooming. You may even notice bees returning to the hive carrying distinctly yellow or orange-yellow pollen in their pollen baskets.

It’s another reminder that those patches of wildflowers surrounding our properties are doing important work.

Goldenrod Honey Has a Reputation of Its Own

If you’ve ever opened a hive during a strong goldenrod flow and thought:

“What is that smell?” You aren’t alone.

Goldenrod nectar and ripening honey can sometimes produce a very noticeable aroma inside the hive. Beekeepers describe it in all sorts of ways—some considerably more flattering than others!

The finished honey can have a stronger, distinctive flavor compared with some lighter spring honeys.

Depending on the other plants blooming at the same time, honey collected during this period may not be purely goldenrod honey. Bees don’t respect our labeling plans—they forage wherever they find the best resources.

But goldenrod can certainly influence the characteristics of late-season honey.

Should Beekeepers Harvest Goldenrod Honey?

This is where things get interesting.

You certainly can harvest fall honey when the colony has a genuine surplus.

But as we move closer to winter, I become increasingly interested in what the bees need rather than how much more honey we can take.

Honey is their winter pantry.

Before removing late-season honey, consider:

  • How much honey the colony already has
  • The strength and size of the colony
  • Your local winter conditions
  • Whether a fall nectar flow is still occurring
  • Whether supplemental feeding may be necessary
  • Your regional recommendations for winter stores

A beautiful frame of honey is tempting.

But a colony entering winter without adequate food stores is a much bigger problem.

Goldenrod Isn’t Usually the Plant Causing Your Fall Allergies

Goldenrod has an unfortunate reputation.

When people begin sneezing in late summer and early fall, they often look around, see huge patches of bright yellow goldenrod and immediately blame it.

But another plant is frequently the bigger culprit:

Ragweed. Ragweed produces lightweight pollen designed to travel through the air.

Goldenrod, on the other hand, relies heavily on insects for pollination. Its pollen is comparatively heavier and stickier, making it less likely to become airborne in large quantities.

Unfortunately for goldenrod, ragweed flowers aren’t nearly as noticeable.

So goldenrod gets blamed simply because everyone can see it!

Goldenrod Is Bigger Than Honey Bees

One of the things I’ve learned through beekeeping is that keeping honey bees makes you pay attention to the entire ecosystem around you.

Suddenly a field isn’t just a field. It’s forage.

A hedgerow isn’t messy. It’s habitat.

And a patch of “weeds” might actually be feeding thousands of pollinators.

Goldenrod is an excellent example.

Its flowers can attract an impressive variety of insects, including:

  • Honey bees
  • Bumble bees
  • Native solitary bees
  • Butterflies
  • Moths
  • Wasps
  • Beetles
  • Other beneficial insects

That makes goldenrod valuable far beyond the honey bee hive.

Should You Let Goldenrod Grow on Your Homestead?

Whenever practical, yes!

That doesn’t mean allowing goldenrod to take over your vegetable garden or every pasture.

Instead, think strategically about areas where it can grow without interfering with the way you use your property.

Good locations might include:

Fence lines: Allow naturally occurring goldenrod to remain along sections that don’t need frequent mowing.

Field edges: Leaving a strip of native vegetation around a field can provide valuable pollinator habitat.

Unused sunny areas: An area that isn’t actively being cultivated may become an excellent little pollinator patch.

Woodland edges: Some goldenrod species thrive along sunny transitions between woods and open land.

Dedicated pollinator gardens: Goldenrod can be incorporated alongside other plants to create forage throughout the growing season.

The goal isn’t to plant one magical “bee plant.”

It’s to create continuous forage.

Think in Terms of a Pollinator Calendar

This is something I believe more beekeepers should consider.

Instead of asking:

“What should I plant for my bees?”

Ask:

“What will my bees have available every month?”

Your goal is to reduce the periods when very little is blooming.

For example, your local forage calendar might include spring trees and flowering shrubs, followed by clover and garden plants, summer wildflowers and herbs, and then goldenrod and asters carrying pollinators into fall.

The exact plants will vary enormously depending on where you live.

But the principle is the same:

Diversity + continuous bloom = better pollinator habitat.

Goldenrod happens to fill an especially valuable spot toward the end of that calendar.

Don’t Mow Everything Just Because Fall Is Coming

This is one of the easiest things homesteaders and landowners can do.

When goldenrod starts blooming, consider whether every section of your property truly needs to be mowed.

That patch along the back fence?

Maybe leave it.

The wild corner behind the barn? Let it bloom.

The edge of a field that isn’t hurting anything? Give the bees a little longer.

Once you’ve started keeping bees, it’s amazing how differently you begin looking at “untidy” areas.

What looks messy to us may look like a grocery store to a honey bee.

Goldenrod Is Also a Beekeeper’s Seasonal Reminder

To me, seeing goldenrod bloom is more than just noticing another source of nectar and pollen.

It’s also a reminder.

Winter is coming.

When goldenrod begins flowering heavily, it’s a good time for beekeepers to start thinking seriously about fall colony management.

That can include checking colony strength, evaluating food stores, assessing queen performance and brood patterns, monitoring and managing Varroa mites appropriately, reducing entrances when needed, checking equipment, and developing a winter preparation plan.

Goldenrod might still be feeding the colony, but the beekeeping calendar is already moving toward winter.

Sometimes the “Weeds” Are Exactly What Our Bees Need

One of my favorite parts about homesteading is realizing how often nature is already doing the work—we just have to stop getting in its way.

Goldenrod is a perfect example.

For years, someone might drive past a field filled with goldenrod and see nothing more than tall yellow weeds.

A beekeeper sees something completely different.

We see nectar.

We see pollen.

We see pollinator habitat.

We see late-season forage arriving exactly when our colonies may need it.

So when those brilliant yellow flowers begin appearing around the homestead this year, don’t be too quick to mow them down.

Take a closer look.

You might find them covered in honey bees.

And somewhere nearby, those bees are carrying that goldenrod nectar and pollen home—one tiny load at a time—as their colony prepares for the season ahead.
